About Us
Foundation History
David and Laura, natives of Tehran, Iran, immigrated to the U.S. as teens, seeking a better future. Inspired by his entrepreneurial parents, David co-founded Chef America, Inc. with his brother in 1977, creating Hot Pockets, a supermarket staple.
Laura, driven by a desire to foster community among artists, developed innovative ways to support and connect them.
After selling Chef America in the early 2000s, David and Laura established the David and Laura Merage Foundation in 2002, channeling their business acumen into tackling major societal challenges. Over two decades, they’ve deepened their philanthropic work, honoring their heritage by cultivating a legacy of giving with their children and grandchildren.
